The Bhagvad Gita and Social Networks
Before the battle of Kurukshetra begins Arjuna sits with Krishna as his Charioteer and asks Krishna "Of all the social networking platforms I have seen none have proven satisfactory, as lord of Dharma..one who sees space and time as one continuum tell me which social networking platform should i use, of their various defects, virtues, uses and purpose..."
Lord Krishna meditates upon this pertinent question and tells Arjuna.... "Partha many social networking platforms have come and many have gone.. facebook most closely
resembles the human condition..the pervasive illusion which lesser mortals perceive as reality.. pictures of babies..drivel, pseudo-philosophy and motivational messages, photos of food ..pets, newborn babies, marriages..(but never death ceremonies) and vacations
are pervasive on this platform...this platform reflects our collective inability to look beyond the illusive veil of maya...
Partha: "And what happens when one deactivates one's account on this platform?Or is a mere mortal like me doomed to live trapped in this platform forever liking and sharing photos of babies and cats and deriving vicarious pain from the pleasures of other on
vacations?"
Krishna:"O , Partha even though you may deactivate your account you will still be possessed of desire to find out what is happening in the lives of your friends and enemies... you would be willing to tolerate the occasional Farmville request in the fear of missing out on an important piece of news which would affect you."
Partha: "Tell me about the other platforms of Google+ and Twitter?"
Krishna: "Partha do you know of anyone who uses Google+, do you possess an account in Google+?"
Partha: "I do not or and nor do I know of anyone who does."
Krishna: "I do not blame you, even very few Google employees have accounts there, and even my infinite mind has not been able to grasp the technicalities of that platform."
Partha: "When you have failed what chance do i as a mere mortal have? Tell me about Twitter, O Glorious one"
Krishna: "Twitter could very well be the platform which will drive the Sage Narad out of business. It delivers news and gossip, fights between celebrities even faster than him. This is the platform you want to be in if you desire news, bloodless fights and name
calling."
Partha: "And what do you feel about the people who call themselves "Social Media experts/strategists/advisors/
Krishna: "There is a special place in hell for these self professed experts...their punishmnet will consist of updating the same status every five minutes till eternity. Before every word they utter they will have to utter the word hashtag."
Partha: "O Glorious one..your advice has been most helpful."
