Nightcrawler
The movie Nightcrawler explores the life of a freelance crime journalist. Jake Gyllenhall brilliantly portrays a man who is willing to do anything to succeed. The character portrayed by Jake Gyllenhall is a loner who lives alone and is introduced into the world of LA freelance journalism quite by accident when he videotapes a crash and sells the footage. Nightcrawler is a depiction of the inverse amercian dream when we find that an individual who is willing to do anything to achieve success.
The character portrayed by Gyllenhall is an entrepreneur who invests the profits made by him back into more equipment and hires people in order to expand his business. He manages to earn good money through some brilliant business decisions succeeds in expanding his business.
The movie also brilliantly satirizes the "breaking news" industry which is always in the race for high ratings how it is willing to twist the truth in order to portray a story which is far from the truth.
The movie exposes the bias of the film industry.
The movie can also be considered a critique of capitalism..how capitalism dehumanizes human relationships and focuses on capital over people. The average viewer will not empathize with the character played by Gyllenhall. Though I am not a trained pyschologist it is safe to say the character portrayed by Gyllenhall is a socio-path.
We see the character played by Gyllenhall do questionable things like putting innocent civilians at risk in order to get better footage.
